From 21st to 23rd of April this year we saw nearly 100 young and eager cattle handler swamp to the Brunswick Show Grounds from all over WA for the annual 3 day WA Youth Handlers camp.

The purpose of this camp is to educate young people from     8 -25 years of age in various aspects of the cattle industry. The aim of the camp is to ensure cattle handling skills are not lost within the industry.

Under direction of the committee who have extensive experience in the cattle industry, the participant’s gain knowledge and hands on experience in:line up

  1. Handling skills in and out of the show ring
  2. Safety
  3. Cattle health and nutrition
  4. Public speaking

Now in its 12th year the feedback from participants still continues to be extremely positive.  Have a listen to what some of the participants from this years camp had to say to an ABC reporter.

Volunteer work and employment opportunities have arisen for participants with several past participants been employed by stock firms, stud breeders and a rural newspaper firm, whilst others volunteer their services as cattle stewards or handlers at shows.

Western Australian’s first female livestock auctioneer was a participant at the camp and has returned to be a camp leader several times. Numerous participants have gone on to win judging and handling competitions at major shows and events. Past participants have even gone on to be judges and associate judges at country shows around Western Australia and at Perth Royal Show.

The variety of cattle breeds participating in this education program is amazing.  Alsha-Baylee Salers is a regular attendee at the camp supplying multiple loan animals to participants who don’t have access to cattle as well as extensive knowledge and experience of the cattle industry.  From this years camp the gratitude from one participant for the use of an Alsha-Baylee  animal is obvious.
